  1. Exploring Fort Michilimackinac

Visiting Fort Michilimackinac was one of my favorite activities in Mackinaw City. This reconstructed 18th-century fort offers an opportunity to go back in time and provide a glimpse into what life may have been like for the first French settlers on this land.

Stepping through its gates, you are surrounded by towering walls made of limestone that date back to 1715.

Walking through the grounds, I felt transported to another era as I took in all the sights. There were demonstrations of traditional methods used for cooking food, such as baking bread over an open fire, and crafting tools from stone or wood.

The knowledgeable guides also provided me with plenty of interesting information about military drills they would practice when defending against attack.

It is easy to get lost in the hustle and bustle of everyday life but spending some time at Fort Michilimackinac helps bring perspective and appreciation for our history here in Michigan.

After exploring the fort, I left feeling connected to this special place and wanting more; it certainly won’t be my last visit!
